גוף המכתב (מודפס):

    Two pieces of an inscribed lintel which have been washed out in the recent flood lie to the south of the main road, between kilos. 68-69. ( 24 m. to the south of telephone pole No. 38.)

    These weigh about 1/2 and 1/4 of a ton respectivly and together form about 2/3 of the whole lintel, the right-hand third being still missing.

    Running accross the valley at this point is a stone retaining wall -- now badly smashed down by the floodwater -- the lower courses are of very massive masonry up to 1.25 m. x 0.60 m. x 0.50 m. evidently brought from some neighbouring building.

    The larger piece of the inscription when turned over showed traces on the back of ashes and mud mortar about 1 1/2 cm. thick. This is the mortar used in building the retaining wall. The stones must have been built into this wall with their bases showing on the face.

    Owing to the local workmen wanting 100 mils each for about an hour's work, we moved the larger piece ourselves some 3 or 4 metres onto harder ground and left it and the smaller piece with the inscription downwards with pieces of wood underneath.

    It is probable that further rain will reveal the missing piece of the inscription.

    If 4 or 5 stone porters, together with some long bars of wood and a jack are taken to the site, the inscription can be brought back in the lorry with ease.

    The police have been asked to keep an eye on the inscribed stones in the mean time.
